“The first duty of a soldier is obedience.” Spanish Proverb
Because He is God, sometimes He does things and says things that our human mind cannot comprehend. Remember how we talked about encountering a God you do not understand? Right. In John 9:6-7 a blind man has an encounter with Jesus. The picture in your head is as good as mine. At this point you are already picturing Jesus touching the man’s eyes and healing him of his blindness but instead, the Son of the living God spit on the ground, made some mud, applied on the blind man’s face and instructed him to go wash in the pool of Siloam.
Luke 17:12-14 [ASV] And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, who stood afar off: and they lifted up their voices, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go and show yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, as they went, they were cleansed.
This scripture is proof enough that what I would call foolish obedience to God’s instruction is key in our journey of life. Instead of proclaiming healing on the ten lepers in this context of scripture, He tells them to go show themselves to of all the people, the priests. This was tantamount to committing suicide because it was only the priests who could only ascertain that they were cleansed.
I sometimes tend to wonder; did they think to themselves go show ourselves to the priests? As filthy as we are? With our wounds leaking and our toes eaten with this deadly disease? What does He mean “go show yourselves to the priests?” They must have wondered to themselves, didn’t we come that He may heal us? Why is He sending us to the same people who proclaimed us unclean?
You know how we talk about taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase? Sometimes it feels like a cliché but I am here to submit to you brothers and sisters that there’s a place that you get to in life where everything else has been taken away, a place where your options are so limited and the only thing that you got is that one step to take. Your obedience to the first instruction you receive determines when the next instruction will come.
The ten lepers I want to believe looked at one another, then they looked at Jesus and they thought to themselves, how about we just do what He is asking us to do? And so, they made a U-turn and went to show themselves to the priests and as they went, the Bible records that they were cleansed.
See, the ten lepers were healed the moment Jesus said “go show yourselves” but the miracle only took effect when they started walking in obedience to the instruction they had received. This walk of life is a battleground and we are soldiers daily facing battles some of which we know and some we don’t know and whether you live or die on this battleground, whether you get a breakthrough or not, is fully pegged on how well you not only receive but also execute the instructions you receive from your commander.
What is God asking you to do today? What instruction from God are you receiving? How sensitive is your ear to God’s instruction? How receptive is your heart to God’s instructions? How willing are you to overlook your current circumstances, your physical appearance, your level of education, your environment and just show yourself without asking too many questions?
They ignored the fact that they still had leprosy, they ignored the fact that they were still in pain, they ignored the fact that they were outcasts, they ignored the fact that they were going to show themselves to the same people who declared them unclean and they made the decision to go show themselves. They walked and they kept walking. We don’t know for how long they had walked; the Bible doesn’t say how far they had gone before they started noticing the changes on their skins. Maybe by the third mile there was still no change but they kept walking. Maybe the city gate was within their sight and still there was no change on their skin but they kept walking. I know you are beat, I know it scary at times, I know one can easily get tired sometimes but would you just keep walking?
Child of God, Go Show Yourself
