The Irony Of The Modern Christian - Lydia Mwasi

Brain cell 1: I love the Lord Jesus and He loves me so much.

Brain cell 2: But am human and no one is perfect. Surely God understands that I can’t be holy coz am human.

Mouth: I am so scared of hell and I don’t want to end up there.

The Disillusion:

Have you recently heard a Christian justify his or her sinful actions in the name of ‘salvation is by grace’, ‘no one is holy’, ‘you should not judge’? We live in a generation where people call sin a weakness or an issue. “I have issues with my wife”, “I have issues with my husband” is a loose translation to mean I have been unfaithful to my wife, I have been unfaithful to my husband” and they found out!

The modern Christian depicts a comfortable lifestyle that is exclusive of any effort to obey God or go out of our way to do His will; all this, is in the name of living in the grace dispensation. The irony of the modern Christian is that he wants to eat his cake and still have it, sleep around and still get a virgin spouse; mistreat others and still receive favor from God. The modern Christian doesn’t want to keep God’s word but still expects to receive God’s promises in full, the list is endless. Modern Christians have mastered the art of living such a compromised life that they frown at any rebuke; their conscience is seared with a hot iron.

The modern Christian has lost sight of his pilgrimage journey, he has settled for earthly possessions as the ultimate reward while forgetting we are in the world but not of the world. What is seen is temporal and we should seek those things that are above and lay our treasures in heaven.  Apostle Paul actually warns his protégé Timothy about the last days.

II Timothy 3:6-8 There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

Unfortunately, we have a form of godliness but God’s power is missing. We confess Christ with our mouths but our hearts are full of wickedness. The amount of wickedness that is harbored in the hearts of those who greet you with a ‘praise the Lord’ sometimes is enough to even scare the devil himself who is the head of the wickedness department. This wickedness has caused stress among God’s children and in some cases even death yet on Sunday we are in church lifting hands that are full of innocent blood unto the Lord. We have exchanged the message of the cross with the message of prosperity, we have misused God’s grace.

A Wake-Up Call:

Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling….

Paul admonishes the church in Philippi to continue to work out their salvation with fear and trembling. The journey of faith requires that we daily work out our salvation. Our obedience to God should be the same when people are watching and even when no one is watching because God is omnipresent and omniscient. Jesus is calling us to holiness just like HE is holy. For without holiness it’s impossible to see God.

And so, this is a wake-up call to Christians, it is a call to holiness. Modernity is not an excuse as to why we can’t live by God’s standards. We have to repent; we have to rise up and be the light that God has called us to be.
